Speaking Gaiwiio was founded by Justin Voty during
2004 between Sugar Grove and Clarion,
Pennsylvania.
Members of
Speaking Gaiwiio have come from throughout the state of
Pennsylvania, New York and into Ohio. Other
participants come from as far away as Uganda, China and
Hawaii. A number of the relationships started during time spent in Clarion, PA at the
Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Others stem back to the
onset of middle school.
The word Gaiwiio come from the Iroquois language of the
Seneca Indian Tribe. It translates as "the Good
Word." Therefore, the title Speaking Gaiwiio means "Speaking
the Good Word." This is something done not only through words,
but also through actions and music.
The Senica are native to the North Western Pennsylvania
and South Western New York region of the United States. The
town of Salamanca, NY is still owned and run by this
tribe.
